SAVORY SIDE PROJECTS:
The Year of Jarrod & Judi
It was the best of times and my favorite year when I was lucky enough to add drum tracks to some marvelous songs by my favorite hometown musicians, Jarrod Case and Judi Lee.
Both Jarrod and Judi went for a lo-fi living room sound yet their work ends up sounding like classic recordings. Jarrod records his own songs while Judi loves to cover tunes by her favorite local songwriters (although she writes as well). Both have wonderful voices, and I loved when they sang together, as they do on "I'll Wait I'll Run."
Judi's got more of a punk/folk aesthetic while Jarrod leans toward blues/rock/soul/folk. Just listen. And check them out on their Soundcloud pages.

The Brownfields ...
The Brownfields are: A. a group of incorporeal beings who make instrumental music that they call "melancholy funk." B. an individual otherwise known as Slim Volume making that melancholy funk.
OK, for real, it's B.
But I feel like the Brownfields are avatars of my most personal states of mind, making the music I'd love to be making if I encountered players who might want to play it, and I wasn't always lacking the means to have a band.
To me, this "melancholy funk" is the dark side of smooth jazz ☻, meant to serve those who need calm or inspiration rather than sensation-numbing thrill-seeking, but don't want someone telling them to be happy. OK, it's not "dark," but it acknowledges sadness in life.
(Caveat: I can only play drums, and there's mostly real drums on these. But I love electric piano and especially love old hollow-body electric guitar sounds. So I use virtual instruments and a keyboard to add faux guitars, faux Rhodes, etc. Sometimes I play real guitar if it's extreeeemely simple.
